Term 3 news

Welcome back to Term Three.

This term we have decided to send our newsletter home via the blog rather than on paper.

A special welcome to Julia Chapman and her family. Julia joined Room 10 at the end of Term Two. Also a special thank you to the parents who have been helping with Reading groups since the beginning of the year. Your help is hugely appreciated.

Term Three is a busy one with our whole school production during Week Nine. The theme of the production is Fairy tales and to coincide with this our BookWeek theme is also Fairy tales. Next week is BookWeek and there will be a parade on Friday where the children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite fairy tale or nursery rhyme character.

What we are learning this term:

English - Reading and Writing Narratives, and Poetry recitation

(We have been using the picture above as a prompt for writing.)

Maths - Measurement, Multiplication and Division, and Fractions
Arts - Drama, Visual Art and preparing for the Production
Sports - Hockey and Basketball

What's on...

A Visit from the Christchurch Library - 27th July
Maui production - 6th August
Book Week - Week Three - 3rd - 7th August

Room 10 are writing about instructions!

Goal/Introduction
Instructions are for helping other people know what they're going to do. We have written different instructions about lots of different things, for example - getting ready for school, how to read to self, how to brush your teeth, how to draw a body, how to make a paper dart, how to draw a dog, how to draw a cartoon character and how to make a braided bracelet.

Things you need to do
-You need a title
-You need to have a goal at the beginning saying what the aim is
-Materials/ingredients/things you need
-Steps you take.
-We have to number the steps so we know which order to go in.
-We need to write instructions with nouns, adjectives and present tense verbs.
-You need to use proper sentences with capital letters and full stops.
-You could have pictures to show what it will look like especially if you are writing instructions for drawing.
-If you are leaving instructions for a pet-sitter for example, you would need to give detailed instructions on how much food to feed them, and how many times a day, and how much water to give them, and how much time you walk them each day.
-You have to know a lot about the thing you are writing instructions about

Conclusion
Some places we use instructions or read instructions are...
-Recipe books
-Games like board games
-On signs like Hazard signs for construction sites
-Lego instructions for putting it together
-Going to put a table together - kit set
-Getting a new TV to work
-In a Craft book
-To sew something together from a pattern
-Instructions to use fishing equipment and go fishing
-How to put something together like a battery operated toy, or a bike or unicycle
-Put together a scooter
-Instructions on how to make instructions (Tomas being funny)
-How to tune a piano
-Builders need plans to make a house
-How to put a bunk bed together
-How to put a garden shed together
-How to put a chair together
-How to set something up
-How to put a dollhouse together
-Science experiments
-How to play an instrument
-How to build a netball hoop
-How to put a trampoline together
-How to grow a vege garden
-Seed packets, growing and caring for plants
-How to play mine craft
-How to tune any instrument
-How to put a fake tattoo on your arm
THERE ARE MANY PLACES WE SEE INSTRUCTIONS AND WE DON'T ALWAYS READ THEM PROPERLY!!
We all contributed to this writing today, hope you enjoy it :)

Kaia's description

In Canada I have a amazing and extrodenary friend named Leif.He is a 9 year old boy with straight blonde hair that touches his shoulders but he is half and a quarter of me tall!

His face is like a peach coloured potato with freckles dotted under his sky blue eyes.

What he always wears is saggy shorts or pants depending on the weather,a rock-climbing t-shirt and sometimes a north face hoodie with no zip,a Columbia rain jacket,a north face wind breaker, winter jacket and beanie,a base-ball cap or a polo fleece and gloves.

One day Leif brang his stuffy to school and started a kitty crew.About three months later it stopped and there was a different crew named the mine-craft crew where they talked about the game so I joined in too.

In class he was a bomb full of ideas!

Then we started having play-dates and became best friends. He quite liked my little brother Coen too.

I,the writer liked rock-climbing just like him so I joined the club and he told me when he started was when he was 5 years old!Mashcot the Indian coach said"Leif is like a little monkey climbing a tree!"

At Glenmore Elementary school he invited a boy named Max to play and in the end they became best friends. What us three liked the most was being with each other.

We became close friends but soon Max went on a trip to Mexico so it was only me and Leif. When Max came back it was winter so he came to school with his huge sled and we went down the snowy hill till lunch was over.

After school they came to my house and we played ice hockey on the ice on my frozen pond. Then my mum called us in to help her make chocolate chip cookies and hot-chocolate so we went inside and made the tastyiest snack ever!

Do you have a kind friend like Leif ? Probably not!

Buddy time and "Read-to-Someone"

Today we went to Room 19 and enjoyed time with our Year 7/8 buddies. We shared our autobiographies with them and read other books we are reading. It will be great to visit Room 19 or have them visit us next time. We have been learning about "Read-to-Someone" as a great way to improve our reading ability. Check out the pic collage of us doing this at the bottom of this page!

ASB GetWise Session

Today Amie visited us from the ASB GetWise Programme to teach us a bit about MONEY!! We learned that:
-If you take your time you can find things for a better price.
-You have to use a special card to get into an account. This is an EFTPOS card and is different to a Credit Card. Eftpos cards mean you can get your own money from your account. Credit Cards are using the bank's money and you have to pay it back in a certain amount of time.
-4 numbers make up a pin number on a card.
-We need to work to get money.
-It's important to do jobs at home so that mums and dads don't have to do everything.

End of Term 1

We concluded our Sustainability study last term with a walk to the beach to clean up. It was a nice way to finish up since we had been to the beach at the very beginning of the term too. We gathered a lot of rubbish..in particular lots of plastic. We know we've made a difference by stopping that plastic entering our ocean.

Sustainability and Drama

We have been learning about Sustainability through our Science Inquiry and also through Process Drama. We created an imaginary seaside town and created roles for ourselves within that town. We then imagined how we would deal with a problem in the town which was some students had come in from out of town and made a big mess on the beach. We explored through freeze frame how the people of the town felt about that. One of the students visited us in role (Mrs Fletcher in disguise) and we held a meeting. We interviewed and questioned the student about their actions and explained to the student why it wasn't appropriate. We explored things like pollution and the effect on businesses and the environment. Then we did another freeze frame to show how we felt after the meeting. Here are some of our freeze-frames. We REALLY enjoyed drama with Mrs Fletcher!!! She's fantastic.

                                   Before the meeting..
                               After the meeting..
